Drinking beer is like a rite of passage. As soon as you become of legal age, you cannot help but want to gulp a bottle or can of the fermented drink. Beer is after all, the third most popular liquid in the world, behind water and tea.
It is also considered one of the oldest prepared beverages in history, dating as far back as 9500 B.C. Archeologists found a Babylonian clay tablet from 4300 B.C. with a beer making recipe. In fact, every civilization had their own version of this famous drink.
Today, there is no sign of this ancient alcoholic beverage going anywhere. There are 4,144 breweries in the United States alone. The recipes are also getting in with the times with many companies producing gluten free beer as well as fruit flavours like apple, mango, banana, and orange. But beer is more than just a drink to relax you after a long day or keep you cool in tropical weather. When consumed in moderation, it’s actually good for you.
#1. Beer helps you live longer.
Researchers at Virginia Tech found that regular beer drinkers had a 19 per cent less chance of dying at a given time than those that never drink.
#2. It doesn’t always make you fat.
King’s College London Professor, Tim Spector revealed in his book The Diet Myth, drinking Belgian beer is good for gut bacteria as it helps with digestion.
#3. Helps fight cancer.
Researchers at the German Cancer Research Centre found that the compound Xanthohumol, helps to protect against breast and prostate cancers.
#4. Mental faculties.
A study from the New England Journal of Medicine found women who have one alcoholic drink a day are less likely to have failing mental faculties as they get older.
#5. There’s no such thing as a “beer belly.”
“There is a common notion that beer drinkers are, on average, more ‘obese’ than either non-drinkers or drinkers of wine or spirits. The association between beer and obesity, if it exists, is probably weak,” a study from the University College London revealed.

The Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology published a report that found people who drink beer in moderation are 41 per cent less likely to have kidney stones.

Beer is full of good minerals, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and vitamins. Tufts University in Massachussets found that the calcium found in beer helps to protect bone density.

The compound Xanthohumol has been known to fight degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s.

Ferulic acid, a potent antioxidant helps to protect the skin from sun damage.

Beer is full of vitamins like B12, B1, B7, B6 and B3. “If you analysed beer you would be amazed at how many super-nutrients there are in it,” says medical director of the Mayr Health Centre in Austria, Dr. Stephan Domenig.
#11. Good for your heart.
A study of 80,000 people in China found that drinking a pint of beer per day decreases the chances of developing heart disease or a stroke.

The hops in beer contain silica which give that shiny, healthy look. Actor and singer Catherine Zeta-Jones is a huge fan. “I smell like the bottom of a beer barrel for days afterwards but it’s very good for the hair,” she admitted.
#13. It boosts your libido.
Hops found in beer work like an aphrodisiac and you don’t need to get super drunk to feel the effects.
#14. Endometriosis and perimenopause.
The phytoestrogen found in beer, helps to regulate hormone deficiencies as well as excess, This does not work for everyone and for those that it benefits, only half a pint one or two times a week is enough to see results.

A study of 38,000 men in the United States found that those who went from rarely drinking to consuming one to two glasses a day, decreased their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 25 per cent after four years.
