It didn’t look much like the lacy numbers we’ve got available today, but the first bra was invented in 1889 by a woman named Herminie Cadolle who was sick and tired of not getting enough support, so to speak. Her version was two pieces that she called the bien-être, which translates to “the well-being” — and that’s exactly what the first bra promised: Well-being for women who were uncomfortable with their breasts not being comfortable.

Since then, the bra has evolved into hundreds of different incarnations, from lacy, racy unmentionables to comfortable cotton jersey cups. And now, things seem to have gone full circle: Though women once loved having the bra as an option, many celebrities are now reverting back to going braless as a style statement.
